What is an Honorary?

An Honorary is a prestigious association title awarded to individuals who are not directly employed by City St Georges. They are typically engaged in teaching, research or scholarly activities and are often, but not exclusively, NHS employees.

Types of Honoraries

There are different types of Honorary appointments, including:

  • Honorary Lecturer – Individuals who are engaged in teaching and/or research activities.
  • Honorary Research Fellow – Research staff at a level up to Lecturer who are not directly employed by the University but undertake research in partnership with the University. This can also include Academic Clinical Fellows and similar roles.

For further examples of Honorary appointments, please see below.

Receiving an Honorary

All Honorary applications are received from the Line Manager via email.

The Honorary Application Form should be completed by the Line Manager and signed by either the Institute Director or Line Manager.

The application should also include the following documents, completed by the applicant:

  • Personal Details Form
  • DEI Form

All required documents should be completed and signed before they can be processed by HR.

Once the completed documents have been received, HR can proceed with processing the Honorary appointment.

Assessing what type of Honorary it is

Before processing an Honorary application, it is important to identify which type of Honorary it is and which Institute it relates to.

Honoraries within IMBAE/IMBE

If the Honorary is within the Institute of Medical and Biomedical Allied Education (IMBAE/IMBE), these applications should only be submitted through Cherise Asante.

The application should also be signed by the relevant individuals outlined in the application form before it can be processed by HR.
